Ayodhya peace moves suffer another blow

The Kanchi Shankaracharya's efforts to end the Ayodhya impasse suffered yet another blow on Thursday when the All India Muslim Personal Law Board demanded that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad postpone its plan to shift the carved pillars, meant for the construction of Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, to the undisputed land on March 15.

The seer, meanwhile, was scheduled to leave for Gujarat by a chartered flight in a bid to promote peace and restore normalcy in the riot-torn state, sources close to him said.

The Muslim board, which had on Wednesday night threatened to pull out of the negotiations if the VHP "backed out" on its commitment to abide by a court verdict on the disputed land, said it would move the Supreme Court, if necessary, to restrain the VHP from carrying out its March 15 programme.

"The government should stop VHP from going ahead with its plan or else we will be forced to take a restrain order from the apex court," Muslim board convenor S Q R Illyas said.

He said the Kanchi seer had assured the board that the VHP would abide by the court verdict if it was allowed to construct a temple on the "undisputed land."

"Either the Shankaracharya was misleading us or the VHP has backed out," he added.

Illyas, however, said the emergency meeting of the board's executive committee scheduled for Sunday has not been called off yet.

Meanwhile, top VHP leaders held a closed door meeting on Thursday morning to discuss the future course of action.
