People stock essential supplies in Ayodhya

Anxious people in Ayodhya have started stocking up essential commodities fearing shortages due to severe restrictions on the movement of transport vehicles into Ayodhya.

"We have started storing foodgrains and other essential items keeping in view the prevailing situation and the fear of repetition of December 1992," Jai Shankar of Hanumangarhi said.

Hira Lal of the same locality said all residents were storing food and other essential items as 'there are apprehensions about what turn the situation will take'.

"Life had become tough after the December 6, 1992 incident and we had almost reached the state of starvation then," another resident Radhey Shyam said.

Schools and colleges have been closed till next Monday and university examinations scheduled to start from March 13 postponed indefinitely in view of the prevailing situation, officials said.

However, official sources said the educational institutions had been closed as these had been occupied by the paramilitary forces moved in here from other places for maintenance of law and order in view of VHP's March 15 programme.

Meanwhile, prices of essential commodities have increased with shopkeepers citing restrictions on movement of vehicles into Ayodhya as the reason.

"We are not getting supplies as even tempos are not allowed in," Rehmat Khan, a wholesale dealer, said.

The administration, however, insists there is no shortage of supplies. "People are getting everything they need at appropriate prices," the district magistrate said.
