Centre to ease restrictions in Ayodhya

The Centre is likely to ease restrictions imposed in Ayodhya following the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's commitment to maintain status quo at the disputed site and abide by the court verdict in the dispute.

At a high-level meeting at Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's residence late on Thursday night, the government also agreed in principle to work out the modalities to hand over within three months the undisputed land in Ayodhya to the Ramjanmabhoomi Trust.

The meeting was attended among others by Kanchi Shankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswati, Bharatiya Janata Party chief Jana Krishnamurthy, VHP chief Ashok Singhal, RSS joint secretary Madan Das Devi, Defence Minister and NDA convenor George Fernandes and Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

It was also decided to send Minister of State for Home I D Swami to Ayodhya to review the security situation and decide on relaxing the restrictions accordingly.

Meanwhile, the Kanchi seer left for Chennai on Friday morning after what his aides called "a successful mission."
