Petitions seek contempt proceedings against VHP leaders, security at Ayodhya

The Supreme Court on Friday fixed for next week hearing on two petitions seeking army deployment at the disputed site in Ayodhya to control the situation and contempt of court proceedings against the VHP leadership, including Ashok Singhal, for violating a SC order.

The petition seeking army deployment, filed by Aslam Bhure, also seeks seizure of stones, meant for use at the proposed Ram temple, lying at Kar Sevak Puram in Ayodhya and Pindwara in Rajasthan by the district administration.

It will come up for hearing on March 13 before a bench comprising Justice G B Pattanaik and Justice K G Balakrishnan.

The other one, filed by one Mohammed Hashim, seeks contempt action against the VHP leadership for violating a SC order on maintenance of status quo at Ayodhya.

It will come up for hearing on March 15 before the same bench.

Hashim's counsel Shakeel Ahmed Syed stated that VHP leaders, including Singhal and Acharya Giriraj Kishore, have 'committed gross contempt of the Supreme Court' by carrying on a campaign for building a Ram temple at the site where the Babri mosque once stood in Ayodhya.

This campaign violates the Supreme Court's order for maintenance of status quo at the disputed site in Ayodhya pending the decision of the Allahabad High Court on the title suits regarding the site, the petitioner said.

Hashmi also sought action against the district magistrate and other top police officials for their negligence in implementing the court's orders.
