Flag march in Ayodhya, security beefed up

In the run up to VHP's planned 'bhoomi pujan' at the undisputed site, paramilitary forces on Sunday staged a flag march in Ayodhya and other sensitive areas as security was further beefed up following intelligence reports that a group of terrorists in the garb of karsevaks might try to target the makeshift temple.

Central Reserve Police Force, Provincial Armed Constabulary and UP police personnel, in full anti-riot gear and totting machine guns, marched through the twin cities of Ayodhya and Faizabad passing through sensitive areas, including lanes close to the disputed site.

Mounted police, anti-riot vehicles and fire tenders also participated in the exercise, which began at 1030 hours and concluded two hours later after passing through areas populated by minorities.

"The exercise was carried out to inspire a sense of confidence among the common people and assert that the administration will not allow any breach of law and order," Additional Director General of Police A K Mitra said.

Mitra said that security in Ayodhya has been further beefed up in view of 'definite' intelligence reports that a group of terrorists might try to sneak into the town in the garb of karsevaks and target the makeshift temple.

Mitra refused to reveal the identity of the terrorist outfit for security reasons.

Meanwhile, a group of Hindus and Muslims took out a symbolic 'peace march' to emphasise the need for communal harmony and national integration.

The silent march was led by noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande.
