'This is no Parliament, don't interrupt'

Immediately after the Supreme Court took up the Ayodhya issue for hearing on Wednesday, commotion broke out in the courtroom, stalling the proceedings for a good ten minutes.

Such was the rush that the bench, comprising Justice B N Kirpal, Justice G B Pattanaik and Justice V N Khare, even threatened retire to their chambers if order did not prevail.

The doors were asked to be bolted and security men instructed to restore silence. All these took ten minutes of the court's precious time, which had earlier adjourned other matters to take up the Ayodhya petitions.

And the sensitiveness of the issue even affected the counsels appearing for various parties. Several of them tried to speak at the same time. The court, like the presiding officer in Parliament, had to intervene asking the counsels to take their seats.

Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate R K Anand, appearing for the All India Babri Masjid Action Committee, time and again interrupted the submissions of Attorney General Soli Sorabjee, who was appearing on behalf of the government.

The bench finally observed: "This is no Parliament Mr Anand, that you can interrupt anybody at any time. Allow the attorney to speak and you will get time when the court requires your assistance."

This evoked a laughter from those present inside, but ensured smooth progress in the hearing, which lasted for nearly one-and-a-half hours.
