Congress criticises Centre's stand on puja

The Congress on Wednesday reacted sharply to the government's stand in the Supreme Court favouring a bhoomi poojan at the acquired site in Ayodhya, saying that the development was tantamount to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's coup against the Constitution.

"The prime minister had promised an all-party meeting that status quo would not be tampered with. But what the government did in the Supreme Court is tantamount to Vajpayee's coup against the Constitution of India," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said in New Delhi.

The spokesman also alleged that Vajpayee had "deliberately subverted" the founding principles of India's democratic polity.

"He has lost credibility with regard to his sectarian neutrality," Reddy said.

"Some clever distinction is sought to be made between the disputed site and the acquired land by the government, which is mala fide and ridiculous," he said.

Asked whether Congress would tender any advice to the partners in the National Democratic Alliance government, he said: "We do not tender advice. It is a matter of conscience and there is no need for external advice."
