Trinamul stays away from NDA meeting

Trinamul Congress, a partner of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, which is upset over the Centre's stand on allowing puja in Ayodhya, was conspicuous by its absence at a meeting of alliance partners convened by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday.

Explaining the position, Trinamul Congress president Mamata Banerjee said that she did not attend the meeting at the prime minister's residence since she had met Vajpayee thrice during the day after the pronouncement of the Supreme Court order and conveyed her views in presence of Attorney General Soli Sorabjee.

Earlier in the day, she said that her party had taken a 'very strong objection' to the Attorney General's pleading in court on behalf of government (on allowing puja).

"This is not a BJP government but an NDA government. We feel we (allies) are being isolated," she said.
