Status quo will be maintained: Ayodhya commissioner

Onkar Singh and Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

When the Supreme Court began hearing issues stemming out of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's decision to perform a bhumi puja near the disputed site at Ayodhya on March 15, amongst those present in the court was Divisional Commissioner of Ayodhya Anil Kumar Gupta.

"I had come to Delhi to be present during the hearing just in case the honourable court had any directive to give to the district administration," Gupta told rediff.com.

"The district administration would implement the directive of the honourable court," he said when asked what would he do in case the karsevaks tried to create trouble in the temple town.

"We have made necessary security arrangements to prevent the karsevaks from carrying out puja against the directive of the court. The status quo would be maintained at all costs," Singh said.

Singh also met top officials in the prime minister's office and home ministry. He briefed them about the steps being taken to maintain law and order in Ayodhya.

"We have converted 18 places into temporary jails and those courting arrests would be kept there," he said.

However, he said he did not visualize any law and order problem in Ayodhya on March 15.
