SC verdict on shila pujan unfortunate: RSS

"Without casting any aspersion on the interim order made by the three-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, we are constrained to say that they have overlooked what the five-judge bench had said in its final judgment in 1994," the RSS said in a resolution passed on Friday in Bangalore.

'It was very unfortunate that the Supreme Court did not enable Hindus to perform 'shila pujan' (prayer to carved pillars meant for the proposed Ram temple) on the undisputed portion of the land, which is in the government's possession and on which even Muslims have not advanced any claim,' the resolution said.

"The sentiments of millions of Hindus are now grievously hurt," it said in the resolution on Ayodhya.

It said that social harmony cannot be achieved by litigation or by deployment of forces, but only by respecting the sentiments of the people.

It asked the government to remove all hurdles placed in the way of 'Ramsevaks' and pilgrims proceeding to Karsevakpuram (a colony in Ayodhya) to offer 'poornahuti' (prayer) in connection with a yagna (religious ritual) being organised by the VHP.

Speaking to mediapersons, RSS spokesman M G Vaidya said 'poornahuti' marks the culmination of the event.

It had nothing to do with the land acquired by the government, he said.

The RSS 'has no knowledge' of the VHP's March 15 programme, he said.

Asked if the RSS would appeal to the VHP to avoid any action, which would create tension on March 15, he shot back: "It is for them to decide. They are intelligent enough."
