NDA trying to suppress debate on Ayodhya: Congress

Despite the bedlam in the Lok Sabha over his remarks against Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Congress spokesman S Jaipal Reddy on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies of trying to 'muzzle' debate on the Ayodhya issue.

Reddy had accused the prime minister of committing a "humongous fraud" on the nation.

He was referring to Attorney General Soli Sorabjee's submission in the Supreme Court on Wednesday that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad could be allowed to perform a symbolic puja on the acquired land in Ayodhya.

The Congress leader said that the performance of the NDA in the lower house was a "deliberate ploy to deflect the attention of the people from the web of glaring contradiction in which they were caught yesterday."

Reddy also said that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan "needs to explain why his members behaved in the manner they did?"

"To the best of my understanding and knowledge, 'fraud' is not unparliamentary. I stick to my formulation," he said.

Reddy said he had met Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed and conveyed this to him.

Congress leader Shivraj Patil and Mahajan were present at the meeting.
