Security forces put on high alert across states

Security forces across the country were put on high alert on Thursday, a day ahead of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's proposed shila puja in Ayodhya on Friday, which the Supreme Court disallowed on Wednesday.

In Maharashtra policemen were deployed in sensitive locations to maintain vigil. Search and cordon operations were also carried out.

In the state capital Mumbai, the Rapid Action Force staged flag marches in Behrampada, Khedwadi, Nirmal Nagar and Golibar lane.

Security was also beefed up in and around the residence of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

In Andhra Pradesh, police were put on high alert in all sensitive pockets of the state.

RAF teams set up 240 armed pickets and 130 patrol teams in Hyderabad to cover all vulnerable areas, Police Commissioner M V Krishna Rao said.

In Bihar, all police stations have been put on high alert, state Home Secretary U N Panjiyar said.

He said that patrolling has been intensified in sensitive areas and additional police contingents were deployed to protect vital installations.

Security was also enhanced across West Bengal, particularly in the sensitive border districts, with a special alert sounded in 12 police station areas of Kolkata.

N C Ghosh, deputy inspector general of police, said that no religious procession or puja in public would be permitted for at least for two days from Friday as a precautionary measure.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh said that the state government has made all arrangements to foil 'fundamentalist forces' on Friday.

In Karnataka, eight battalions of the state reserve police, home guards and District Armed Reserve platoons have been deployed in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad as a precautionary measure.
