Centre to implement SC order: Vajpayee

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday gave a categorical assurance in the Lok Sabha that the government will implement the Supreme Court interim order on the Ayodhya issue in "letter and spirit".

Making a statement in the House, Vajpayee said he had given this assurance in Parliament earlier. "I reiterate it today."

The government had stated clearly that the Ayodhya issue could be resolved either through talks between Hindus and Muslims or through a judicial verdict, he said, adding this was also mentioned in the President K R Narayanan's address to Parliament.

The prime minister said being the statutory receiver, the government was duty bound to maintain status quo at the acquired site.

He said adequate preparations had been made to maintain law and order in Ayodhya.

Vajpayee appealed to all political parties and social organisations to cooperate with the central and state governments to maintain peace and communal harmony.

The government had requested the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court to expeditiously decide on the title suit in respect of the disputed site in Ayodhya, he told the House.

The prime minister also recalled the efforts made by Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati to help solve the issue, but regretted that it did not yield the desired results.
