SC order will be implemented: PM

A day after the Supreme Court verdict disallowing bhumi puja at the acquired land in Ayodhya, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday assured the Lok Sabha that the order would be implemented in "letter and spirit".

"I wish to assure the House that adequate preparations have been made to maintain law and order in Ayodhya and to ensure that the March 13 order of the Supreme Court is adhered to," he said.

"I wish to categorically and unambiguously state that the government will implement the court's order in letter and spirit."

"The Government of India, being the statutory receiver, is duty bound to maintain the status quo at the disputed site in Ayodhya," he added.

Vajpayee also sought to emphasise that no affidavit or written submissions were filed on behalf of the government in the Supreme Court.

The opposition had on Wednesday stalled proceedings in Parliament accusing the government of "playing a fraud on the nation" with Attorney General Soli Sorabjee submitting to the apex court that a symbolic puja should be permitted.
