Bedlam in LS over remark against PM

An objectionable remark against Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee by a Congress member plunged the Lok Sabha into bedlam on Thursday leading to its adjournment for the day.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance members were on their feet as soon as Congress member S Jaipal Reddy accused the prime minister of committing a "humongous fraud" on the nation.

He was referring to a request by Attorney General Soli Sorabjee to the Supreme Court on Wednesday to allow the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to perform a symbolic puja on the acquired land adjacent to the disputed site in Ayodhya.

As all hell broke loose in the House, Reddy sat quietly and did not respond to NDA members' demand for an unqualified apology.

When the House reassembled at 1400 hours after the first adjournment following the uproar, the ruling members remained adamant on their demand for an apology.

Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed assured the House that he would go through the records and expunge any remark that was unparliamentary.

This had no impact on the agitated members who continued with their protest forcing the chair to adjourn the House for the day.
