Sena raps Centre over Sorabjee's submission

Shiv Sena, an ally in the National Democratic Alliance coalition, on Thursday criticised the Centre for not consulting other partners before presenting its case in the Supreme Court on the issue of bhumi puja in Ayodhya.

"The NDA government does not belong to the BJP alone and allies should have been consulted over the Ayodhya matter," party chief Bal Thackeray told reporters at his residence in Mumbai.

Attorney General Soli Sorabjee on Wednesday had submitted before the apex court that a puja could be allowed at the undisputed land in Ayodhya.

Asked about Vishwa Hindu Parishad's stand to go ahead with shila puja, Thackeray said: "We don't need anyone's permission to perform puja ... it is our birthright."

The Sena was supportive of the VHP on this issue, he said.

However, he hinted that the clamouring of NDA allies over Sorabjee's stance would not affect the stability of the government.

"Nobody wants mid-term polls. Because of fear (of elections) all MPs are together," he commented.

"The government should take a firm stance on Ayodhya without bothering about votes and direct the court to expedite the matter and take a final decision," he said.

"We have got strong evidence and we can prove that there was a Ram mandir at the disputed site earlier," Thackeray added.
