A compromise formula in the offing in Ayodhya

A compromise appears to have been thrashed out late Thursday night to resolve the Ayodhya crisis.

As per a formula floated by a government emissary, 25 sadhus and Vishwa Hindu Parishad volunteers would we allowed to perform shila pujan and shila daan in an ashram-cum-temple that lies just outside the 67 acres of government-acquired land.

They would be led by Ram Janambhoomi Nyas chief Ramchandra Das Paramhans and VHP leader Ashok Singhal.

Shortly thereafter they would be permitted to offer prayers at the heavily barricaded makeshift Ram temple that stands on the debris of the razed Babri mosque. However, entry to the makeshift temple would be allowed only in batches of four.

The emissary, Navneet Sehgal, who not long ago was Faizabad district magistrate, was closeted with Paramhans for hours. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vinay Katiyar also joined him to persuade the Nyas chief to give up his adamant stand.

Paramhans had threatened to commit suicide if he was not allowed to perform shila pujan and shila daan.

Even caretaker-Chief Minister Rajnath Singh had expressed deep concern over Paramhans's threat. He also urged Muslim leaders to intervene for the sake of "saving the dharamacharya's life".

Top officials were understood to be giving final touches to the formula that was yet to receive a nod from the Nyas leader.
