BJP leaders happy with peaceful shila daan

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders on Friday expressed happiness with the peaceful shila daan in Ayodhya, saying it was time for the opposition parties to do 'some soul-searching' and discard its 'lop-sided perception' of secular values.

"Playing politics is one thing, but deliberately hurting the sentiments of the majority community does not accord to our belief in sarva dharma sama bhava (all religions are equal)," Bharatiya Janata Party chief K Jana Krishnamurthy said.

He said, "The puja passed off peacefully in Ayodhya much to the distress of the opposition parties," adding that the Congress reaction was like that of 'crocodile shedding tears'.

The Congress is 'expressing relief', while we had all along maintained that the court verdict will be implemented, he said.

He added that the central government had also given an assurance that any disturbance would be put down with a 'heavy hand'.

"When there is no violence (in Ayodhya), they (opposition parties) are now feeling uneasy since they have nothing to hit us with," he said.

Party Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Sanghpriya Gautam said that the government had handled the Ayodhya issue with 'tact and finesse', which the opposition parties did not expect.

"It is certainly going to benefit our party. The people are not blind. They have seen how the opposition parties have conducted themselves and how we have behaved gracefully, despite being under constant fire from them," he claimed.

BJP spokesman Sunil Shastri said, "The bluff of the opposition parties has been exposed with today's developments in Ayodhya."

"We are satisfied and I think our allies are satisfied that everything went off without any violence or mishap and the credit naturally goes to our government, which took the initiative in ensuring that the verdict of the Supreme Court was implemented in Ayodhya," Shastri said.
