800 arrests in Mumbai, security tightened

Vijay Singh in Mumbai

The Mumbai police detained around 800 people on Friday, even as two companies of the Rapid Action Force and 35,000 policemen fanned out in the city in view of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's shila daan at Ayodhya later in the day.

Strict vigil was being maintained and patrolling intensified in sensitive areas of Tulsiwadi, Behrampada, Worli, Jijamata Nagar, Tardeo, Antop Hill, Pydhonie, Jogeshwari, Kurla and Mazgaon, police said.

Railway police were present in adequate numbers at stations and police escorts were provided in ladies' compartments of suburban trains.

The police also requested mobile service providers to stop SMS services till 1800 hrs, as they apprehended that inflammatory messages regarding the situation in Ayodhya could be passed on.
