Paramhans says he saved
government's honour

A day after his climbdown on the much-hyped shila daan programme in Ayodhya, the Ram Janambhoomi Nyas chief Ramchandra Das Paramhans on Saturday said his soft approach was aimed at saving the government's honour.

"I abided by the Supreme Court decision (by not performing the shila daan on the acquired land). I saved the government's honour," Paramhans told reporters.

"There could have been bloodshed had I gone ahead with my plan of donating the shila near the acquired land. That is why I dispersed the kar sevaks who had come along," the Mahant said.

He said he refused to hand over the shila to Divisional Commissioner A K Gupta because he does not "trust" him.

"The shila is now secure and will be used when temple construction work begins," he said and added that Friday's programme marked the "the beginning of the construction work."

On his next move, Paramhans said it would be "very sensitive," but refused to elaborate.

All he would say was: "Just as the Babri mosque was built by force, so would be the temple."
