Parliament, not courts, should resolve Ayodhya dispute: VHP

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and leaders associated with the Ram temple movement on Saturday asserted it was the 'responsibility of Parliament' to find a solution to the vexed issue, not that of the courts.

"Political parties should consider the issue with an open mind leaving aside their political ideologies. Friday's shila daan has proved that the temple issue is the biggest one in the country," VHP national joint secretary Rajendra Singh Pankaj said.

It was a 'matter of faith and belief for the Hindus', he asserted.

"Parliament is the supreme body in the country. Why is it shying away from its responsibility?" he asked.

Senior leaders of the VHP on Saturday held a closed-door meeting at Karsevakpuram in Ayodhya to discuss the post-shila daan scenario and chalk out the future course of action.

VHP international president Ashok Singhal, vice-president Giriraj Kishore and Pankaj were among those present at the meeting.

BJP MP and Bajrang Dal leader Vinay Katiyar, who has been closely associated with the Ram temple movement, also favoured an out-of-court settlement.

Significantly, the VHP did not reiterate its assurance to abide by the court verdict on the issue.

"The assurance lost its relevance after the All India Muslim Personal Law Board rejected the Kanchi shankaracharya's compromise formula," Pankaj said.

However, the VHP did not rule out negotiations with the Muslims.

Pankaj, however, alleged that 'Muslims have been shying away from resolving the matter through dialogue'.
