VHP blames Orissa incident on 'anti-social elements'

Blaming 'anti-social elements' for the mayhem in the Orissa assembly, which was taken over by a violent mob for over 20 minutes earlier in the day, the state unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Saturday night demanded an inquiry into the incident.

In a press release issued late on Saturday night, VHP's state organising secretary Basant Kumar Rath alleged that 'anti-social elements committed this despicable act taking advantage of a tense atmosphere created by the misbehaviour of policemen towards women 'Ramsevaks' who had accompanied a delegation of VHP leaders into the assembly to present a memorandum to the speaker and the chief minister'.

Rath demanded action against the policemen, alleging they resorted to unwarranted lathicharge and other excesses.

Meanwhile, the VHP's central leadership refused to comment on the issue.

"We have not yet got a complete report about the incident," VHP joint secretary Rajendra Pankaj said in Ayodhya.

"We have issued an appeal to VHP activists not to violate the law and participate in VHP programmes in a peaceful manner," he said.
