SC dismisses contempt charge against Rajnath Singh, VHP

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Rajnath Singh and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leadership, including Ashok Singhal, for alleged violation of court orders for maintenance of status quo at the acquired land in Ayodhya.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice G B Pattanaik dismissed the petition filed by Mohammad Hashim terming it 'misconceived'.

The petitioner alleged that VHP leaders, including Singhal and Acharya Giriraj Kishore, 'committed gross contempt of the Supreme Court' by carrying on a campaign for 'converting Babri Masjid into Ram Temple'.

By carrying on with the campaign, they have violated the repeated court orders for maintenance of status quo at the disputed site pending the decision of the Allahabad high court on the title suits regarding the site, the petition alleged.
