Moving the Prevention of Terrorism Bill at the joint sitting of Parliament, Advani said he stood by his statement that the chief ministers could not openly support the bill, as their parties were opposed to it.
Former prime minister Chandrashekhar said it was "wrong" on the home minister's part to mention in Parliament what the chief ministers might have felt personally.
Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Somnath Chatterjee said Advani was trying to create suspicion among political parties by questioning the bona fides of chief ministers in opposition-ruled states.
"I did not expect this from L K Advani," he said.
