11 drown in boat accident in Bengal

M Chhaya in Kolkata

At least eleven people drowned on Sunday when an overcrowded country boat sank in the Mori river in Raidhighi area in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.

The boat was carrying about 70 passengers, most of who were on their way to a political rally, when it capsized at about 1130 IST.

The boat was on its way to Kukltali from Raidighi.

District officials had rushed to Raidighi along with a disaster management team for relief and rescue operations.

District Magistrate Alapan Bandopadhyay told reporters that all bodies, including that of seven women and a child, have been recovered. The bodies have been identified and sent for post-mortem.

More people would have drowned had local villagers not immediately come to the rescue of the passengers while some others managed to swim to safety.

Some of the passengers, whose health had deteriorated, were admitted to a hospital in Raidighi.

At least two people are still reported missing and are believed to have died, Bandopadhyay said.
