Mayawati to reshuffle cabinet
to 'accommodate' rebels

K G Suresh in New Delhi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati plans to undertake a major cabinet reshuffle in December to accommodate rebel BJP MLAs and others as part of a deal to contain dissidence and ensure the stability of the BJP-BSP coalition, highly placed BJP sources said in Delhi on Sunday.

While several MLAs would be 'adjusted' in the council of ministers, others would be 'accommodated' in various state government corporations and undertakings, they said.

A decision in this regard was taken at the party's highest-level following parleys senior leaders Kushabhau Thakre, Rajnath Singh and Kalraj Mishra had with the rebels, the sources said.

The 'package' to placate the dissidents had come up for discussion at a recent meeting of the BJP's Central Election Committee presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, they said.

The reshuffle has been planned for December as any such action immediately would send the 'wrong message' that the party has surrendered to rebels, the sources said.

According to the sources, some independents have also been promised cabinet berths to wean them away from the Samajwadi Party.
