Karnataka stops releasing water to TN

Karnataka has stopped release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu, Minister for Information Kagodu Thimappa said on Monday.

The release of water from the Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir was stopped on Sunday, he said.

After a Cabinet meeting in Bangalore, Thimappa said as ordered by the Supreme Court, the government had taken steps to ensure that 9,000 cusecs flowed into the Mettur reservoir in Tamil Nadu. But since the water flow was higher between KRS and Mettur in the intermediate range, there was no need to release water, he added.

The Cabinet also decided to request Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority.

The government had decided to comply with the Supreme Court order "in letter and spirit", he said, adding 9,000 cusecs will be released daily till November 6.

The Cabinet did not take up the issue of convening of an emergent session of the legislature to discuss the Cauvery issue, he said.
