Karnataka not to stop releasing water

Karnataka on Sunday said it will release 9000 cusecs of Cauvery waters everyday to Tamil Nadu, as directed by the Supreme Court.

"Release of water from the Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir has not been stopped and we are maintaining release of 9000 cusecs...," Minister for Information Kagodu Thimappa said.

Earlier Thimappa, while briefing the press on Sunday's Cabinet meeting, had stated that the government had stopped releasing water since the inflows between KRS and Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu was higher than 9000 cusecs.

Karnataka began releasing water to Tamil Nadu in accordance with the Supreme Court's November 1 directive.

The court had also asked Karnataka to ensure an inflow of 6000 cusecs from November 7 to 15, the day it will hear the two contempt petitions filed by Tamil Nadu against Karnataka.

The Cabinet also decided to request Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority at an early date.
