The police action against some Uttar Pradesh dissident legislators, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were trying to defuse the crisis, has caused consternation in some sections of the party.
They feel such an action could not have been taken without the tacit approval of some senior party leaders.
It was well-known that dissident legislators Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, Dhananjay Singh (both independents), Bharatiya Janata Party's Awadhpal Singh Yadav and Ajit Singh and Samata Party's Raja Ram Pandey had cases against them.
Raja Bhaiya and Dhananjay Singh were arrested on charges of threatening BJP legislator Puran Singh Bundela against deserting the dissidents.
This happened when they were scheduled to meet former BJP president Kushabhau Thakre, who had come to the state to end dissidence, on Sunday.
A case of robbery has been registered against dissident BJP legislator Awadhpal Singh Yadav.
The police also tried to arrest another BJP dissident Ajit Singh from a hotel in Lucknow, while he was holding a meeting with some other rebels in which Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh was also present.
Ajit Singh, however, managed to slip out, the dissidents' group spokesman Ramashish Rai said.
A case has also been registered against suspended Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Jaiprakash Yadav, who revolted against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
Many in the party favour tough measures against the dissidents, citing poor attendance in the meeting of the dissidents to justify their contention. Only one MLA and three MLCs attended the last meeting of the rebels.
Party sources also do not rule out action against other dissident legislators in the next few days.
