BSF, Bangladesh Rifles exchange gunfire

M Chhaya in Kolkata

A stretch of Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district remained tense Saturday after border guards of the two countries exchanged fire.

Border Security Force officials said Bangladesh Rifles' soldiers fired on a BSF output in Samshernagar area of the district. The Indian guards then retaliated.

The officials said the gun duel began on Friday night and continued for about five hours. No injury has been reported on any side.

The BDR attack was said to be against the construction of an alleged illegal jetty by Indian authorities over the Icchamati river within West Bengal.

Officials of the two border guards held a flag meeting Thursday.

BSF and BDR officials are slated to hold another flag meeting on Sunday to sort out the matter.
