An all-party meeting on Saturday afternoon favoured sending Tamil activist Kolathur Mani as an emissary to forest brigand Veerappan for negotiating the release of former minister H Nagappa.
After the three-hour meeting at Vidhana Soudha, Janata Dal-United state unit president Byre Gowda said the opposition had urged the government to take all legal measures to get Mani released on bail so that he could enter the forest at the earliest.
"The opposition parties have told the government that it should not resume operations by the Special Task Force to rescue Nagappa, as such an action may become counter-productive," he added.
The meeting also authorised the government to take all appropriate steps to get bail for Mani.
"The opposition parties, including the JD-U, the JD-S, the BJP, and the Left parties have told the government that the hostage crisis should be resolved peacefully through negotiations," opposition leader M C Nanaiah said.
The meeting also told the government to take seriously the 12-day deadline set by Veerappan.
Mani is lodged in the Bellary jail after being arrested by the Karnataka STF early this year for aiding and abetting Veerappan with arms and explosives.
