Personnel of the Naxalite special wing of the Tamil Nadu police shot down one militant and nabbed 22 others, including girls, in an encounter. Police officer Eganathan sustained injuries in the incident, which took place on Sunday.
The attack occured in Chinnakanakampatti village of Dharmapuri district. The police were fired upon by the Naxalites, who were trapped in a mango grove.
Siva alias Parthiban, a local leader of the Revolutionary Youth League, an arm of the People's War faction, was shot dead in the incident, sources said.
The raids followed reports of revived Naxalite violence in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
