HC notices to defence minister, others
on MiG mishaps

A public interest litigation has been filed in the Rajasthan high court seeking phasing out of MiG-21 aircraft of the Indian Air Force.

Acting on the petition, a division bench of the court, consisting of acting Chief Justice M R Calla and Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra, on Monday issued notices to Defence Minister George Fernandes, Defence Secretary Subir Dutta and IAF chief S Krishnaswamy.

The petition cited reports about the accidents of MiGs at regular intervals, leading to the loss of young pilots. It said the planes violate Article 21 of the Constitution, which upholds the right to live.

The petition contested the reported statement of the defence minister that the MiGs were safe.

About 55 MiG-21s have crashed in the past five years in which 30 pilots were killed some bailed out safely.
