Samata Party joins opposition chorus, says Mayawati govt reduced to minority

Participating in an inconclusive discussion on the political developments in UP in the Lok Sabha, the Samata Party's Prabhunath Singh supported the opposition's demand that Chief Minister Mayawati prove her majority in the state assembly.

Initiating the discussion, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav accused Governor Vishnukant Shastri of protecting the chief minister and demanded that he be recalled.

The opposition lashed out at Mayawati for dealing 'ruthlessly' with her detractors, especially some independent legislators who had withdrawn support to the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party-Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal coalition.

Congress member Prakash Jaiswal said the recent by-election to the UP legislative council, in which the ruling combine's candidate could poll only 193 votes in the 403-member assembly, had proved the government was in a minority.

Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani is to reply to the debate on Thursday.
