Guwahati bar association objects to judge's posting

The Gauhati high court bar association in Assam has objected to the posting of an allegedly scam-tainted judge to the only high court for northeast India.

Justice Amar Bir Singh Gill, who was with the Punjab and Haryana high court before being transferred to Guwahati, is one of the three judges involved in the Punjab Public Service Commission recruitment scandal.

The association on Monday held an extraordinary general body meeting chaired by its president, Aroop Borbora, to 'express grave concern and serious anguish' over the reported recommendation of former chief justice of India B N Kirpal to transfer Gill to the Gauhati high court.

The meeting said the judge's transfer would be detrimental to the administration of justice in the Northeast in view of reports in the media alleging that Gill sought undue favours by virtue of his position as a judge and that he was involved in the PPSC scandal.

Sources said the lawyers decided to stage a sit-in demonstration in front of the Gauhati high court on Wednesday and file complaints against the new appointment with the President, the chief justice of India and the Union law minister.

The names of three judges --- the other two being Justice M L Singhal and Justice Mehtab Singh Gill --- had reportedly figured in the confessional statements of former PPSC chairman Ravinderpal Singh Sidhu's alleged touts.

Justice Amar Bir Singh Gill and Justice Singhal were accused of helping out their daughters in the selection process conducted by the commission, while Justice Mehtab Singh Gill was accused of recommending the name of the son of a judge belonging to another high court.

All three have denied the allegations.
