Goa crash toll rises to 18,
naval personnel cremated

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

The death toll in Tuesday's plane crash increased to 18 on Thursday with a young hotel employee succumbing to injuries at the Goa Medical College hospital.

Mukesh Naik (22) was employed at a hotel near Dabolim airport in Vasco. He was on his motorcycle when debris from one of the IL-38 aircraft involved in a mid-air collision fell on him. The aircraft crashed near the naval museum.

He suffered 92 per cent burns and was in a critical condition.

One plane had fallen on a bungalow under construction, killing five workers and injuring many others.

Three of them, with around 80 to 90 per cent burns, are struggling for their lives at the GMC hospital, Medical Superintendent Rajan Kunkolienkar said.

Two others who suffered between 20 to 30 per cent burns and one with a minor skull fracture are improving, he said.

Meanwhile, nine of the 12 naval personnel who lost their lives in the accident were on Thursday morning cremated with full military honours at the Vasco public crematorium.

Bodies of the others were sent to their native places in nearby Belgaum district in Karnataka, Chandrapur district in Maharashtra and Kerala, respectively.
