Mystery about unidentified plane deepens

The mystery about a plane that is said to have flown over North Dinajpur district in West Bengal on Thursday dropping some packages has deepened.

Some of the packages, according to eyewitnesses, had landed in a well in Mukdumgach in North Dinajpur district. The well has been cordoned off and villagers have been warned not to use its water.

The Indian Air Force on Friday maintained that none of its aircraft flew over Mukdumgach on Thursday.

A senior BSF official, however, said border guards at a nearby outpost had heard the sound of an airplane followed by an explosion.

Additional DIG, North Bengal Frontier, P P Gupta on Friday questioned 11-year-old Mumtaz Khatun who claims she saw packages falling into the well.

Mumtaz told Gupta she saw a "whitish balloon-like" object falling from the sky. "It bobbed about for a few seconds before sinking...this was followed by the sound of an explosion." She, however, did not see any aircraft.

Frightened, Mumtaz ran back home and informed her uncle, who in turn got in touch with panchayet pradhan Namita Roy. Roy informed the police.

A report from North Dinajpur quoting state Civil Defence Minister Srikumar Mukherjee said a team of forensic experts has collected water from the pond for analysis.
