BJP's ministerial aspirants in UP start lobbying

With Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati announcing that she would expand her cabinet in October, ministerial aspirants in the Bharatiya Janata Party have started intense lobbying.

Around 40 BJP legislators have already staked claim for a berth in the cabinet, sources say.

While some believe they have a right to be in the ministry because of their seniority, others claim that their presence is a must to maintain regional balance, the sources say.

The BJP's problems have been compounded by the chief minister's resolve to restrict the size of her ministry to around 65, and in that case the BJP would get around 30 to 35 berths, they add.

UP BJP chief Vinay Katiyar admits it will not be possible to include everyone in the cabinet. Those who do not get a berth will be compensated by other means, he says.
