M Karunanidhi, former Tamil Nadu chief minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, on Friday blamed Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for the stalemate in the Cauvery water dispute.
Jayalalithaa, he said, had first approached the Supreme Court seeking to quash the Cauvery River Authority's ruling, and then retreated her steps to the same CRA to make Karnataka release the water.
He also said that Jayalalithaa's attitude on the Nagappa abduction crisis sent the wrong signals after she blamed Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna and his government's decision to change the Special Task Force chief.
Karunanidhi described Krishna's decision not to release the Cauvery waters as 'regrettable'.
Clarifying that he was not supporting Karnataka, Karunanidhi said the state's predicament on the issue should have been taken into account.
The DMK chief also extended his party's support to the Tamil film industry's plans to stage a rally on October 12 in the lignite town of Neyveli to demand the stoppage of power supply to Karnataka.
He in turn requested them to extend their support to the DMK if it launches an agitation on the issue of pricing of rice in the state.
Karunanidhi, however, avoided questions on film star Rajnikanth's call to the Tamil film industry to reconsider its decision to launch an agitation.
