Three policemen, including a circle inspector, were killed and another injured when People's War naxalites triggered a landmine blast in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday afternoon.
The cops were returning after conducting an inquest and preliminary investigations in an incident of "famine raid" organised by the naxalites when the incident took place between Chinta Jinkalapalem village between Vemavaram and Machavaram, a police spokesman told rediff.com over phone from Guntur.
The deceased were identified as circle inspector Y Brahmaiah of Pidigurala police station, driver Ramakrishna Reddy and constable Ravi Kumar. The injured constable, M Koteswara Rao, was admitted to Guntur general hospital.
The police suspected that the trap could have been laid for Superintendent of Police P S R Anjaneyulu. The SP, however, had taken precautions and travelled in a private vehicle.
Earlier, villagers led by PW naxalites raided houses and shops in a village in Guntur on Monday.
A police spokesman said that a group of 100 people, including 12 armed men, went to Regulagadda village under Bellamkonda mandal. They hijacked a road transport corporation bus and asked the driver to take them to Vemavaram village in Machavaram mandal, about 120 km from Guntur town.
They raided seven houses, a medical shop, a cloth store and a kirana shop belonging to Vysya community and took away gold, cash, a fridge, a TV set and 100 bags of paddy.
"It appears to be a famine raid. Earlier, similar raids were conducted in Adilabad and other districts. It is suspected that the Bellamkonda dalam of the People's War is involved along with nearby villagers in this latest raid," the police spokesman said.
