Ten children die at Burdwan hospital

Ten children have died over the past two days at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.

While three deaths were reported on Saturday, seven children died on Sunday, hospital superintendent Panchu Gopal Roy said.

These deaths come close on the heels of 18 infant deaths in a Kolkata government hospital last month.

Roy ruled out negligence in treatment of the children and said, "All the ten were referred to our paediatric ward in critical condition by nursing homes and primary health centres from the Kalna-Katwa and Arambagh sub-divisions in Hooghly district at the last minute."

The children were suffering from meningitis, para-meningitis, and encephalitis, he said.

Dismissing reports of setting up of an inquiry committee, Roy said that 'specialists' had attended to all the cases.

The paediatric ward has 132 children in the age group of one day to five years in 60 sanctioned beds, he said.

Meanwhile, Congress Sevadal members staged a demonstration in the hospital premises on Monday to protest against the 'negligence of the doctors'.
