Northeast monsoon arrives in Tamil Nadu

The much-awaited northeast monsoon has set in over Tamil Nadu, and consequently a low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and adjoining southwest bay, the Chennai meteorological centre said on Friday.

Under its influence, several parts of the state reported rains over the past 24 hours.

According to the weathermen, Muthupet in Thanjavur district received 8 centimetres of rain, while Jayamkonda-Cholapuram and Vallam, both in the neighbourhood, recorded 5 centimetres each. Many places in coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, and a few places in interior Tamil Nadu and Kerala also received heavy rainfall.

The timely setting in of the northeast monsoon is significant in the light of the failed southwest monsoon.

The rains may also serve a politico-legal purpose. Coming at a time when the Supreme Court is hearing the 'Cauvery waters dispute case', Karnataka may revive the argument that the northeast monsoon would ease the situation in Tamil Nadu.
