Increased security near reservoirs makes farmers suspicious

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar.

Farmers in Karnataka are suspicious of the increased security around the reservoirs of the Cauvery river basin and feel it is a precursor to the Karnataka government's releasing water to Tamil Nadu.

The farmers feel that Chief Minister S M Krishna is trying to escape the Supreme Court's wrath and save his government.

They have stepped up their vigil over the reservoirs and 'activated their suicide squads'.

Two platoons of the Rapid Action Force have been deployed near the Kabini reservoir and the government has clamped ban orders under the section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which prohibits the assembly of more than five people. Special state forces have also been deployed in addition to the central forces.

But the government does not seem to be in the mood to release water to Tamil Nadu. Krishna has said he will wait till October 28, when the Supreme Court is expected to pass its order on the contempt petition filed by Tamil Nadu.

Krishna has also called for an all-party meeting on Sunday afternoon in Bangalore.
