The independent legislators who had withdrawn support to the government on Friday night had demanded that Chief Minister Mayawati be asked to prove majority on the floor of the House.
The governor also clarified that while eight legislators had signed the letter of withdrawal of support, "we can take cognisance of only seven of these, as one [Kaushal Kishore] did not figure among those who had initially extended support" to the government.
"Therefore, even after the pullout by seven independents, Mayawati enjoys the support of 210 member in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh state assembly," Shastri said.
Asked if he would reconsider the decision if more legislators chose to withdraw support, he said, "Well, that is a hypothetical question right now."
The governor said he would go strictly by the rulebook and the Constitution.
