Amar Singh says he is being threatened

The political crisis in Uttar Pradesh deepened on Sunday with Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh alleging that he was being threatened.

A top state government officer last night threatened "me that I will be implicated in murder and rape cases if I continue to interfere in the ongoing political developments in the state", he said in Lucknow. "I accept the challenge."

Accusing Chief Minister Mayawati of adopting "terror tactics to crush the voice of dissent", he said dissidents would not be cowed down by such measures.

Taking strong exception to the Bharatiya Janata Party's allegation that his party was indulging in horse-trading, Singh said BJP and independent legislators had raised the banner of revolt against the government to change the "rotten" system and no "allurements" were offered to them.

Singh, who arrived in Lucknow on Sunday morning, was closeted with the leader of dissident independents who had withdrawn support to the government, Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, at his residence. Several other legislators were also present.
