Cauvery row: Curfew imposed in Mandya

Indefinite curfew was imposed in Mandya on Wednesday as the agitation over sharing of Cauvery waters intensified leading to sporadic violence in the district in the last twelve hours.

The agitating farmers are on an indefinite hunger strike at the Silver Jubilee Park in Mandya. Some agitators whose health deteriorated were shifted to hospitals.

The situation took a turn for the worse when some farmers torched two government vehicles and threw stones at shops and government offices in the town.

Police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the 5000-odd persons who had assembled at the venue violating prohibitory orders. Tear gas shells also were lobbed at the protestors. Several persons were injured in the incident.

Curfew was imposed after the agitators attacked policemen. Violence was also reported from other parts of the district.

Meanwhile, the police rescued three farmers who tried to jump into the Cauvery river near the Krishna Raja Sagara dam protesting against release of water to Tamil Nadu. Several agitators were taken into custody, but later released.

Protest marches were held in Mysore and other parts of the Cauvery basin districts while attempts to barge into the Kabini and Krishna Raja Sagara dams continued.

Road and rail traffic between Bangalore and Mysore are expected to be disrupted for another two days in view of the disturbances.

In another development, several legislators from Mandya district have sought more security from the government following the attack on an MLA's house in Mandya town on Tuesday.
