Shabir Shah meets Pakistan deputy high commissioner

Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah met Pakistani Deputy High Commissioner J A Gilani on Sunday evening and discussed the Kashmir issue with him.

Gilani invited Shah for the meeting after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani refused to meet the separatist leader.

During their thirty-minute meeting, Shah apprised Gilani of his talks with various political parties and his continued dialogue with the non-official Kashmir Committee headed by Ram Jethmalani.

Shah told reporters that he conveyed to Gilani that the Kashmir Committee was willing "to act as a bridge between India and Pakistan in resolving the Kashmir issue".

He asked Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to help create a conducive environment to break the stalemate with New Delhi after the December 13 attack on Parliament.

"After September 11, it is crystal clear that violence has no role to play anywhere in the world," he said. "New Delhi should also respond to the repeated offers by Musharraf and come to the table."

Shah also met Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet and apprised him of the "inadequate response" of the government to his offer for talks.
