The Rajasthan high court on Wednesday refused to allow a fair glorifying 'Sati' at Jhunjhunu town in Shekhawati region of Rajasthan.
The Rani Sati Temple Trust, that runs the country's biggest and oldest 'Sati' temple in Jhunjhunu, had approached the court against a state government order denying it permission to hold the annual fair.
The fair was first banned after the enactment of the Rajasthan Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987, following the Deorala Sati incident, in which Roop Kanwar, a young widow, burnt herself on the funeral pyre of her husband.
Rejecting the trust's petition, Justice K S Rathore repeated the directions given by the Supreme Court in 1987.
The 1987 Supreme Court order had said there should be no glorification of 'Sati' in any manner.
Meanwhile, the law and order situation in the temple town is stated to be peaceful. The local administration is expecting thousands of people to gather in the temple on September 7 when the main annual ceremony will be held.
