62 candidates file nominations in Srinagar, Budgam districts

With this, the total number of candidates in the fray for the 15 segments in the two districts has gone up to 112, official sources said. Polling will be held on September 24.

They said 43 candidates filed their nominations from 10 constituencies in Srinagar, while 19 filed from five segments in Budgam.

Education Minister and National Conference rebel Aga Syed Mehmood filed his papers from Budgam segment as an independent after the ruling party denied him ticket.

The official NC candidate is Mehmood's grandnephew Aga Syed Roohullah, who is at the centre of a controversy for allegedly being below the legal age to contest.

Six women filed their nominations on Thursday taking the total number of female candidates in the second phase to nine. There are no women in the fray in the first phase.

Prominent among the female candidates are Khem Lata Wakhloo (Congress) from Sonawar, Shameema Firdous (NC) from Habbakadal and Amreen Badr (Congress) from Budgam segments.

For the first time, separatist parties - the recently floated Kashmir Resolution Movement and the J&K People's Party - have fielded candidates for the polls. Six KRM and one JKPP candidates filed nominations as independents.

The Shiv Sena and Lok Janshakti Party are also making their debut in the state with the former fielding one and the latter two candidates.

Senior People's Democratic Party leader Abdul Rehman filed his papers from Kangan segment while Syed Abdul Rizvi (Congress) is contesting from Zadibal, Gopi Kishan Mujoo (BJP) from Sonawar ad Najeeb Abbas (PDP) from Amirakadal segments.

The scrutiny of papers will take place on Friday.
