Krishna in Delhi to urge PM to hold CRA meeting

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna was in New Delhi on Friday to urge Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to convene an emergency meeting of the Cauvery River Authority, to sort out issues arising from the Supreme Court's order earlier this week.

Krishna's lobbying comes a day before the crucial Cauvery River Monitoring Committee meeting. He held talks with state leaders and MPs on the issue, while waiting to meet Vajpayee, before the latter left on a nine-day foreign tour.

In an informal session with reporters, Krishna said he would make "last-ditch" efforts to see that his request to convene an emergency meeting of the CRA materialises.

Asked whether Karnataka would approach the Supreme Court against its order directing the state to release 1.25 thousand million cubic feet of water to Tamil Nadu daily till the CRA decides on the issue, Krishna said, "We still have two days ahead of us".

Regarding Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's reported comment that Karnataka, Kerala, and Pondicherry had "ganged up" on the issue, he said, "It is an unfair statement. Each state is concerned about its own interest. So politics takes a backseat as far as Karnataka is concerned, especially with the river water issue."
